I know this DohVinci deluxe styler set is supposed to be for kids but sometimes I like to play too. And this was fun and productive- I decorated some greeting cards and some gift labels with pretty flowers stars and a few squiggly lines. Okay, the lines needed work.

This set comes with three bright colors of what I guess they refer to as doh though its consistency is much looser and smoother than the Playdoh we're all familiar with. It goes through the handle easily and the end product looks even and attractive. I tried it on regular paper, bristol board and a stiff fabric. It stuck great to the papers, and although it stuck to the fabric It worked loose in a few places when I tried to glue the fabric to a piece of cardboard. Obviously I should have fastened the fabric to the cardboard first.

As I worked with the set I started etching patterns with a toothpick and several other items which added some detail to the finished pieces. Using plastic or metal picks worked better than toothpicks since it moves through the dough more smoothly. The dough remains workable for at least thirty minutes, probably longer. The directions say the items should dry in 24 hours but mine took a bit longer which may have been because of humidity. Once it dried it still feels slightly spongy which didn't bother me, it wasn't sticking to other objects or sticking together- it’s just an unfamiliar medium. The one thing I never mastered was drawing nice even lines. If you have ever tried to write happy birthday in icing you know what I mean. I guess either ya got it or you don’t.

I am happy to report that I did finally share my treasure with a nine year old and she gave it her seal of approval also. She picked up on how it all works in no time and turned out nice even stampings right away. The handle was a little large for her hands but it’s easy enough to squeeze that it wasn't too much of an issue. It's no trouble to change the colors since the handle doesn't touch the doh there is not need to clean it between colors. Of course much to my chagrin she also managed to make much smoother lines than I did. I’ll try to get over it.

Produced by Hasbro, the maker of original Play-Doh, the DohVinci styler is a good way to entertain your little ones for a while and allows them to be creative.

The four interchangeable tips are a flower, star, heart, and butterfly. It comes with three colors of "Doh" in cartridges that are easily swapped out for color changes. The product is dispensed onto a surface such as wood or cardboard (the instructions also say "duct tape" but I'm not sure why you would want to do that) and then it hardens into a permanent artwork. Yes, it's a somewhat different formulation than the regular re-useable Play Doh.

It comes with 1.5 oz. net weight of compound, not enough to do a large project and if you have some kids sharing it you might want to supervise to make sure everybody gets a turn; the learning curve isn't too steep though so not much is wasted practicing.

It is recommended for age 6 and up, but I believe (again, with supervision) that it could be used by 4 or 5 year olds without incident. The only small parts are the four tips and they are large enough that I don't think they are a choke hazard but you'll have to decide that for yourself. The formula also contains wheat according to the package, so if your child has an allergy issue take heed before purchasing and using.

It's a fun little art project tool, good for a rainy day, and it's a chance to make a memory of a fun afternoon that will be remembered years from now when the long-forgotten artwork is re-discovered in a keepsake box from childhood.

I'd recommend it, and the price is reasonable.

Both my young daughters love this! We received it free to try from Hasbro but liked it so much we ended up buying a bunch of the kits and dough refills. (The dough goes fast and once it's squeezed out you can't put it back into the tube to re-use.) The styler is really simple to use, you just pop the dough in and squeeze the handle. Even my 6 year old was able to figure it out all by herself and was a pro in minutes.

The dough is softer than playdoh so it comes out easily without much pressure. It doesn't smell like playdoh at all either. It kind of smells like cake frosting to me and has a cool airy, spongy feel to it. DohVinci is my girl's new favorite craft. I love it too because it keeps them entertained while learning and doing something creative. The price is great too.
